About this event
"I would like to invite you to attend the 20th Annual International Paddling Film Festival and a River Social scheduled for this coming March 29th. The River Social will take place in the Haw River Ballroom from 5:30 till 7:00 pm with the films to follow from 7:00 till 10:00 pm.
The purpose of the River Social is to bring together the general public with civic leaders, environmental organizations, paddling clubs, land trusts, volunteer trail builders, river rescue teams, county and municipal park and recreation programs and outfitters to celebrate the Haw River State Trail and get to know each other; i.e., to foster a river community. The Saxapahaw General Store will provide both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food for purchase and the Haw River Ballroom will provide beer and non alcoholic drinks for purchase. The Ballroom will also help create the atmosphere for the evening with river music playing in the background.
In addition to a display or information table during the River Social, some participating groups are using afternoon events to promote what they do. For example, the Carolina Canoe Club, the Carolina Kayak Club, River King, Team River Runner, and the American Canoe Association are conducting on-water paddling demonstrations. The Haw River Assembly will set up a critter monitoring station to sample for aquatic organisms that are indicators of water quality. Other groups will conduct guided hikes on the many trails in Saxapahaw (https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/celebrate-the-haw-river-with-hikes-and-a-film-fest-4031253) while some will focus their efforts on river safety and rescue.
There is no charge for attending the River Social (except for food and drink) or participating in the afternoon events. There is; however, a $18/person online registration fee to view three hours worth of incredible paddling films from throughout the world.
